Guided Mushroom Forays

Guide jpgOver the years, I have often been asked if I ever take individuals out foraging for edible mushrooms or just to learn more about mushrooms in general. I offer a Guide Service, tailored to fit your needs. I can also come to your property for a group foray.

If interested,  contact me,  being sure to leave an e-mail and/or phone number.  I will get back to you ASAP.

All outings will be within 50 miles of Knoxville, where I have access to both public and private locations.  The limit will be from 1 to 3 people per day, depending on logistics. One person, $200. Two people $300 total. A three person group is $375 total.. I will customize the experience to fit your objectives.

Lunch, beverage and transportation from a central location is included. A liability waiver will be furnished for your signature. $50 deposit, per person, is required to set a firm data. Forays are rain or shine.

Imagine a forest, dappled in morning light.  A deer nibbles on tender shoots within 10 feet of where you stand, mushroom gathering basket in hand.  Chanterelles are everywhere you look and Whitey Hitchcock, mushroom guide par excellence, just smiles.  Fun doesn’t even begin to describe the experience! – Sylvie W.

What an amazing adventure! Our expectations were exceeded by Dr. Whitey and by what the forest floor had to offer. Dr. Whitey patiently answered all of our questions and eagerly pointed out mushroom after beautiful mushroom. We were shocked at the variety of edible mushrooms we took home at the end of the day. Dr. Whitey is a font of knowledge and we HIGHLY recommend spending a day with him learning and laughing. Brenda (a.k.a Umbo) and I (a.k.a Clavulina) encourage anyone interested in expanding their knowledge to invest in a day with Dr. Whitey!

I had a wonderful time learning about the mushrooms growing in the forests.  Great company and very informative. Carol J

I learned a tremendous amount during my guided mushroom excursion with Whitey. We found a half dozen edible or medicinal mushrooms, which I learned to identify, as well as potential non-edible look-alikes. I gained the confidence to identify edible mushrooms, and have been out successfully mushrooming since my trip. I have attended other mushrooming educational forays in the past, and did not gain the confidence to actually go out into the field afterward. Whitey tailored my trip to what I wanted to learn, and was a very congenial host. The mushroom foray with Whitey was well worth the time and investment. – Michael P.

We had a fantastic experience hunting mushrooms in the wild with Dr. Whitey Hitchcock. All in all it was an unforgettable experience. I highly recommend a Foray with Whitey for anyone interested in learning more about the bounty that lurks in our Tennessee woods.

What a special day it was. An off-season foray with Dr Whitey produced multiple opportunities to explore his extensive knowledge of some rarely seen ‘shrooms as well as that of flora and fauna.  I cannot wait for our next adventure. – Michael _
