The last two weeks have been pretty good for Chicken of the Woods and Cauliflower mushrooms. What I’ve been waiting for, however, is the Hen of the Woods, Grifola frondosa, also known as the Maitake. There was one present at a foray on Saturday on the Plateau, and this morning I got an e-mail from a friend in Nashville that she had collected one. Game On !! I spent some time near the house today, in several different wooded areas where Hens are known to hang out with mature red oaks – scarlet oaks and black oaks especially. Found two on new trees and one on a tree I had collected in 2015. Total of 11 pounds and I’m psyched about being out tomorrow and Wednesday before heading to the Oconee foray.
